Catholic Charities West Michigan understands the value of seniors in our community and is pleased to be the sponsor of the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs of the AmeriCorps Seniors.
The mission of AmeriCorps Seniors is to engage persons ages 55+, particularly those with limited incomes, in volunteer service to meet critical community needs. AmeriCorps Seniors strives to provide a high-quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers and those they serve.
The Senior Companion Program provides seniors with limited income the opportunity to give back to the local community by serving the elderly, those who are shut in, and other citizens with disabilities to sustain their ability to live independently, remain engaged in the community, and provide respite care for caregivers.
Since 1965, the Foster Grandparents Program provides seniors with limited income the opportunity to give back to the community by serving children and assisting them to increase school readiness and academic engagement.
AmeriCorps Seniors Success Stories
“For kids, the formative years are so important. They need a head start, and I’m grateful to be a part of that.”
“If you have a heart for kids and the time to share, it’s so worth it. Especially if you’re like me, and have it in your blood to be a caregiver.”
“It’s a very small school system, obviously,” she says. “And yet it’s so rewarding, all the way around. Being a friend to others in those classrooms is a gift, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”
“It’s a wonderful and rewarding program, and like belonging to a second family. Every day is a beautiful day to experience something new.”
“I was raised by my own grandparents, and I was always taught that you do unto others. To look after one another.”
“It just gives you such a rewarding feeling to know you’re helping those who need a helping hand.”
